Doman DADU

project description : a 600 sf DADU, to be used as a preschool. A compact site with irregular property lines shaped the footprint into a skewed rectangle. In reaction to this, the design implements a butterfly style roof on an angle. the interior program is created by an inserted cube that contains the kitchen, bathroom, office, stairs and lofted bedroom.

project description : a 1,000 sf single level DADU utilizing a plan concept that I find functions very well for small houses, that is that the public space (living-kitchen-dining) is separated by what a client called an “isthmus”, from the bedrooms and bathroom, or private spaces. The ceiling in the public wing is very tall to create a feeling of more space and light. while the private wing has a more standard ceiling height. The gable roof lines aim to fit in with the existing houses of the area.

project description : a 600 sf backyard cottage for a seattle residence. with tall ceilings and gracious openings for light, the apartment will not feel small. a series of operable doors and privacy screens provides flexibility for the occupant to let in or close off as much of the outside as desired in the moment. the three main spaces are the living/kitchen , bath, and bedroom have an ample amount of built in cabinets and drawers to hide away the clutter to allow the space to feel larger than it is.

with two sleeping loft areas the unit can adapt to accommodate various rental requirements, from an individual to a small group.

built of CLT (cross laminated timber) on an insulated heated concrete slab, the roof is of thick gauge steel, the siding is vertical rain-screen concrete fiber board with a clear sealed cedar detail. triple pained windows and rock wool insulation, the small unit can be heated with two wall mounted electric mini splits units.

project description : I’m really excited to be working on this project. a young couple with two young kids building a home! sited at the top a steep slope the home flips the typical program upside down, placing the bedrooms on the lower floor and elevating the living and kitchen space. The roof of the bedrooms becomes an elevated covered deck and the main living areas are a pavilion on top of the house with amazing views of the lake framed by towering pines. and all of this under 1200 sf.

project description : why not a geodesic dome ? Domes are on the rise. since its invention and popularization by buckminster fuller in the 60’s the geodesic dome has a varied and curious past. the efficiency of a dome in material use in relation to space created is unmatched, the dynamics of heating are better for human occupation….domes !

this geodesic dome is a 2 frequency dome, that means there are two types of triangles, based on a subdivided dodecahedron, of which follows the golden section. a 20’ outside diameter with about 6’ triangular panels.

project description : a detached accessory dwelling or backyard cottage for a couple and their three children. the focus is on durability, simplicity, and functionality. the building stands on the ally side of the property and will function initially as a rental, and an office. after the kids grow up, the cottage will become the residence for the owners and the main house will be rented.

the owners wanted to compliment the existing house and neighborhood, provide ample light and transitions into outdoor seating areas to make the cottage feel open and airy.

project description : this project utilizes the unfinished attic space in a 1960’s rambler. The goals are to make it as light and airy as possible. Keeping the existing wood framing for the roof and adding 24 skylights in addition to using as many white surfaces as possible will keep this attic space filled with light all year round.

project description : what to do with a small basement with low ceilings? this project focuses on taking advantage of the coziness and oddity of having columns throughout the space. With enough texture and white paint the space should feel brighter and more livable, the columns become a feature instead of a distraction, spaces are left open without much furniture and most shelves are built in so as to create the feeling of more room while living with low ceilings.

project description : a building for everyone, one of the goals for this project is to create single level living, where as the predominant housing in seattle has been more focused on creating townhouses with small footprints of which are taken over by vertical circulation. this design is more efficient as there is a single primary circulation core with an elevator as well as other other universal design/ ADA techniques.

the structure of the apartment is made of prefabricated CLT panels, allowing for expedited construction. the design utilizes repeated windows and minimal forms which lowers construction and maintenance costs as well as more timeless looking building.

all the finishes are higher quality and more durable because the most sustainable building is the building that lasts and does not need to be replaced

the apartment building does feature highly insulated thicker walls and floor assemblies, south facing windows for winter solar gain and a solar panel array/ pergola on the common roof deck.

project description : adaptive reuse of a canopy structure for outdoor playing in the winter months. the project reimagines the 30’ structure as a two level play area that utilizes the new enclosed level 1 as a weight gym and extended gym space. the exterior of the new deck level is wrapped in a 3d rope play structure. there is a mega stair that can be used for play or for plays and other presentations for the school.

an experiment with foldable structures and sustainable design. the chair is made from 2 whole 4’ by 8’ standard sheets of plywood cnc milled to create various shapes that allow for the whole to be folded into form. it is then bolted with standard barrel bolts in key locations with a fabric mesh in between the outer wood layers.

project description : a single level retirement home for artists in an isolated field on Whidby Island that takes advantage of the open space for the couple to stretch their legs after a life in the city. the design focuses on simple rural forms and materials as well as operable walls and windows to control the light on the interior for living and for creating art. with thick insulated walls, a steel roof and thick sawn cedar siding, this home will be maintenance free.

the south module has great view of the city and is fitted with floor to ceiling windows to bring ample light into the space.
